Wedding Night Intimacy

Reader Question

'Dr. Mia, I am getting married soon and I have been wondering a lot about wedding night intimacy. I know it is kind of old-fashioned, but I am waiting for my wedding night to lose my virginity. What can I expect?'

Mia Says...

Mia Rose To be truthful, wedding night sex can sometimes be a bit of an anticlimax.

Firstly, losing your virginity is not necessarily the pinnacle of pleasure that you read about in romance novels. Sex usually gets better with experience and those first attempts are often just a means to that end.

There may be a small amount of blood when your husband's penis penetrates your hymen (the fleshy, thin membrane that partially closes the entrance of your vagina). However, previous experiences such as masturbation, manual penetration by your fiancee or even strenuous sporting events may have already ruptured your hymen.

Also keep in mind that you may feel tired after a day of great excitement, or a little anxious, which may impact on your experience.

My best advice is to relax as much as you can, ask your husband to go slow and indulge in adequate foreplay prior to penetration.

Here's to wishing you a wonderful sexy wedding night! :)
