UTI and Sex

Reader Question

'Dr. Mia, is there a link between getting a UTI and sex? It seems that I get a urinary tract infection every time we have sex, so I'm not very enthusiastic about being intimate with my boyfriend. This is really starting to affect our relationship. Do I need to stop having sex? Do you have any advice for me?'

Mia Says...

Mia Rose You don't have to stop having sex... but you do need to find out why you're getting these urinary tract infections. It is very important that both you and your boyfriend see a doctor to rule out any sexually transmitted infections. A doctor will also be able to check whether you have an anatomical irregularity that allows for intercouse to irritate the urethra.

A few other things you could try include drinking cranberry juice. There is a specific tannin in cranberries that have been shown to prevent recurrent UTI's in women.

Make sure that you are very aroused during sex before your boyfriend enters you. Ask him to avoid over-enthusiastic thrusting. Make sure to urinate immediately after intercourse and drink lots of water to stay hydrated.
