What is Traumatic Masturbatory Syndrome?
Reader Question
I've been masturbating face down for years (rubbing myself against the mattress) and now I've read that it can cause a condition called Traumatic Masturbatory Syndrome (TMS). Apparently face down masturbation causes sexual dysfunction in men. I've never used my hand much, but am doing more of that now that I'm aware of this condition. Is it better to use the penis-in-hand technique?
Mia Says...
Don't believe too much that you read about TMS, simply because what is online is usually speculation by people in the non-medical field.
TMS was identified by Dr. Lawrence Sank in 1998, but his findings were based on a very, very small sample of men... and I'm not aware of much research that has been done about it since. Dr. Sank said that face-down masturbation as you describe can cause weak erections or impotence.
The good thing about TMS though, is that retraining to masturbate face up with penis in hand solves the problem, according to dr. Sank. That means that you are doing the right thing by using your hands.
