Sudden Erectile Dysfunction
Reader Question
'I am a 42 year old male suffering from sudden erectile dysfunction. I have never had problems with erections before, so I don't understand what is going on. Do you have any ideas on this?'
Mia Says...
There are many causes of erectile dysfunction but we do know that it can be age-related. In fact, more than 50 % of men between the ages of 40 and 70 will experience problems with getting an erection.
Keep in mind that the more often you have sex, the less likely you'll be to have erection problems. Having lots of sex keeps the penis healthy as erections flood the penis with oxygen-rich blood and oxygen keeps the muscle tissue inside healthy. (I am aware of at least one study of 1000 men aged 55 -75 that found that men who had sex less than once a week were twice as likely to develop erectile dysfunction as men who had sex at least once a week.)
Also consider whether you have anything more than usual stress in your life at the moment. Dating a new partner can also lead to having more anxiety about performance than usual.
That said, it is very important that you discuss the issue with your general practitioner to rule out any health problems.
