Signs of Infidelity
It's not difficult to spot the signs of infidelity if you know what to look out for. If you suspect your partner is cheating on you, ask yourself what is different in their behaviour. These are some of the signs of cheating in a relationship:
- Your partner's routine changes significantly, for example they suddenly work late or travel more frequently;
- Your partner's clothes smell of an unfamiliar scent or aftershave;
- Your partner immediately takes a shower when they get home;
- Your partner spends more money than they used to without being able to justify it;
- Your partner doesn't seem to have a need to make love to you or actively rejects you when you initiate sex;
- Your partner changes passwords on their mobile phone or email account if you previously had access to it;
- Your partner spends significantly more time online and attempt to hide who they're communicating with;
- One of the most telling signs of infidelity in combination with some of the above is emotional withdrawal from you. You may feel that they are annoyed with you all the time and conflict between you increases significantly, or they may just lose interest in spending time with you.
It is important to remember that none of these infidelity warning signs are meaningful in isolation. You have to trust your intuition, but it's just as important to distinguish between unfounded jealousy and a true inner knowledge that something in your relationship has changed.
To Catch a Cheat
Suzi Godson, author of The Sex Book recommends the following measures to catch a cheat if you are suspicious that your partner may be having an affair.
• Order an itemized phone bill and check the most frequently dialled numbers;
• Check your partner’s mobile for saved text messages or recently received or dialled calls;
• Check in and out email accounts and folders;
• Examine all credit card bills for suspicious expenses, increased fuel usage and receipts;
• Visit the office if your partner claims to be working late;
• Change your routine and come home when you are not expected;
• Follow your partner, or hire a private detective to do.
Be aware that it may be heart-breaking to confirm your misgivings and that you’ll be forced to make some tough decisions. In the end it’s better to do what you need to do to catch a cheat rather than live in denial.
