Reader Post: 'I used to have a variety of sex problems, all starting and ending with very low desire for sex. I wanted to want my husband sexually as much as he wanted me, but my libido was practically non-existent. As a result it took me ages to get aroused, and because of my anxiety about not being able to 'perform,' my orgasms were also very weak. Sometimes I couldn't even climax, no matter how hard my husband tried to please me.
I saw a gynaecologist to try and get help, but he said that it was probably a result of my pregnancies (even though my youngest was two years old already) and that the problem would most likely correct itself. When it didn't, I went to see a counsellor, who told me that it sounded like a relationship problem. I believed him because by that time my husband and I were fighting over trivial matters all the time. We were both just so frustrated with my lack of sex drive. When counselling didn't help, I was just about to give up and try to accept living in a sexless marriage. Then I saw an episode of Oprah where a woman of approximately my age talked about her sex problems. It sounded so similar to what I was experiencing, I couldn't believe it. She was advised to have her hormone levels checked. I decided to do the same.
When the results of my blood tests returned, I was informed that my testosterone levels were extremely low. I finally knew what was wrong with me! I was given hormonal treatment and from then on, my libido improved drastically!
My husband stuck with me through all of this, and even though we journeyed through turbulent waters, I can't ever thank him enough. My advice to any woman with sex problems is to get their hormones checked. It may just save your marriage!'
