Online relationships are booming as online dating sites thrive on the Internet. Social websites like Facebook and MySpace - and now even Twitter - are also very natural ways to meet potential partners as online relationships tend to imitate real-life socialising.

With the click of a button you can buy someone an electronic drink, or send a flower, a gift or a hug, which are all fun non-threatening ways of opening up lines of communication. There’s also an application called ‘Introduce Me’ on Facebook, which helps you meet a friend of a friend (FOAF). A word of warning: the quizzes that you use to find out if someone has similar tastes than you are quite addictive.

The people you meet on these sites are generally friends of friends. In that sense it’s safer than chatting to people on dating or chat sites as part of the screening process has already been completed for you.

E-Love Boom

With the time people spend on the Internet these days, it’s easy to see how online dating is fast replacing picking up in bars. There are so many ways to meet people online today that it’s no longer embarrassing or taboo.

It’s also easy to flirt online because it eliminates people being rejected face-to-face. Social site users tend to be quite open and raunchy.

On the other hand, honesty isn’t a given. You can be anyone you want to be online, and so can the people you’re flirting with. Follow the guidelines in the section on cybersex to keep you safe in the dating-game. Also look out for inconsistencies in details and make sure you build in some safety measures when you decide to take it off-line.

Happily Ever After

Though you may love the look of someone online and share similar interests, you will never know if the chemistry is right until you meet someone face-to-face. Don’t have unrealistic expectations. You won’t know about people’s annoying little habits until you spend some time with them in real life.
