Labiaplasty for Better Sex?
A Growing Trend
Is labiaplasty an option in the quest to have better sex? Given the increase in women opting for plastic surgery to the genitals, it seems that many hope that aesthetic changes to the genital area will ensure great sex.
Aesthetic Procedures to the Genital Area
Aesthetic surgery to the reproductive area is becoming more common. This includes the following procedures:
* labiaplasty, which is the reshaping of the labia minora;
* clitoral hood reduction, or removal of the tissue that covers the clitoris to improve sensual stimulation; and
* hymenoplasty, the repair of a torn hymenal membrane to restore ‘virginity.' This procedure tightens the vaginal canal by repairing the vaginal wall from within.
Surgery clearly has its place in instances where women have severe malformations or medical issues, but one has to wonder at what society's ideas are of the 'perfect' woman.
One only has to take a good look at modern porn films to see how many women are featured with beautifull shaped, symmetrical labia or in some instances, no labia at all, linking the porn industry to the increasing numbers of women looking for aesthetic reproductive surgeries.
The bottom line is that women don't weigh up the risks or potential complications inherent in plastic surgery (including infection, altered sensation, dyspareunia, adhesions and scarring) with their expectations of how surgery might improve their sex lives.
Great sex is about so much more than what the genitals look like. It's about natural confidence in bed no matter what the shape of your body or body parts. It's about surrender and passion and connection.
It is sad that so many women in our society are so unhappy with their physical appearance that they are willing to risk myriad side effects to fit into a cookie-cutter body type that they are frequently told by the media is more desirable.
There is a wide range of what can be considered normal when it comes to shape of the genital organs. Human variability is a beautiful thing, in both men and women - and isn't this uniqueness of the human body something to celebrate? If we all give in to society's expectations to be just like everybody else, the world would be a very dull place!
