I remember reading some of Cummings' erotic poetry the first time when I was very young. It was during a time of my own sexual awakening and I was amazed at the sensuality that oozed off the pages.
Sexy poetry has the power to transport a woman to a very sensual spot in the imagination: a place of candle light and rhythm and sighs and soft shadows playing on the wall.
These are a few of my favourites... (and a song that I like...)
I like my body when it is with your...
I like my body when it is with your
body. It is so quite new a thing.
Muscles better and nerves more.
i like your body. i like what it does,
i like its hows. i like to feel the spine
of your body and its bones, and the trembling
-firm-smooth ness and which i will
again and again and again
kiss, i like kissing this and that of you,
i like, slowly stroking the, shocking fuzz
of your electric fur, and what-is-it comes
over parting flesh…And eyes big love-crumbs,
and possibly I like the thrill
of under me you so quite new
- E E Cummings -
....and an oldie
Upon the Nipples of Julia's Breast
Have you beheld (with much delight)/
A red rose peeping through a white?/
Or else a cherry (double graced)/
Within a lily? Centre placed?/
Or ever marked the pretty beam,/
A strawberry shows, half drowned in cream?/
Or seen rich rubies blushing through/
A pure smooth pearl, and orient too?/
So like to this, nay all the rest,/
Is each neat niplet of her breast.
- Robert Herrick -
Think like a Poet
Follow Stephanie Dowrick's advice:
'When it comes to love, think like a poet not an accountant. Don't keep a ledger of who has done what and what you are owed. Nor how often you are right and your partner is wrong. Being loving matters much more than being right.'
Erotic Journaling
Exercise
Refresh your memory on the power of
erotic journaling
to tune into your most sexy self. The challenge today is to write your own erotic poetry.
1. Take some time out to relax. Slow your breathing, close your eyes and picture yourself in a safe place where you cannot be disturbed.
2. Think of the best sex you've ever had and visualise the act in as much detail as you can. Who were you with? Where did it happen? What did you see? Hear? Taste? Smell? Feel? What were your dominant emotions?
3. Come up with five words that describe the experience. Was it sublime? Passionate? Slow? Furious? What other words come to mind? Think lust, desire, tease, hot.
4. Open your eyes and write a poem about the experience. Don't worry about rhyme or form. Nobody ever has to see it... unless you would like to submit it for inclusion on this website (see details below):
An example
I found this beautiful example on the net. Note the simplicity, the mention of ordinary details.
Need
We are only/
arms, legs,/
and the places
where they meet/
in these minutes/
before dawn.
A basket/
of newspapers/
waits by the door
there is wet laundry/
in the washing machine./
The sweat pools
in the small of my back,/
and your fingers paint/
vines and flowers.
I taste the salt,/
with this ink we write/
on hearts.
