Causes of Erectile Dysfunction

Physical and Psychological Reasons Explained

The causes of erectile dysfunction are varied, depending on whether difficulties to maintain or develop an erection adequate to have intercourse are total (the man cannot sustain an erection in any circumstances) or situational (erection can only be sustained in specific circumstances).

Total vs Situational Erectile Dysfunction

Total erectile dysfunction is relatively rare and usually has a physical basis. Fixing erectile dysfunction in this case will be dependent on a thorough medical assessment, including an investigation of the blood supply to the penis. Physical factors also include some general medical conditions, alcohol, drugs, or the aftermath of surgery.

Situational erectile dysfunction, where a man is able to have an erection in certain circumstances, for example upon wakening, or during masturbation, ususally is psychological in nature.

One of the most well-known psychological causes of erectile dysfunction is having been raised in a highly moralistic environment where the person in question got punished for showing an interest in sex, masturbating, or exploring their bodies.

Another one of the psychological causes of erectile failure may be the result of a disastrous sexual experience (or more) in the past, for example receiving negative feedback from a partner. Early negative experiences with sex can go a long way towards undermining a man's self-confidence in his ability as a lover. This leads to excessive worry and performance anxiety, which often plays an important role in the development of erectile dysfunction.

Factors such as alcohol use, stress and fatigue can also temporarily impair erectile ability. However, it's important to note that it's entirely normal for men to sometimes be unable to achieve or sustain a full erection. The important thing is not to let it build into something that causes you excessive anxiety, becaus that can easily get you stuck in a performance anxiety - erectile failure loop.

Fixing Erectile Dysfunction

Fixing erectile dysfunction is most effective when addressed as early as possible. Treatment includes medication, for example Viagra, which effectively treats a wide range of men with erectile failure.

Other physical treatments include the implantation of a penile prosthesis, self-administration of injections, and the use of a vacuum constriction device.

For psychological causes of erectile dysfunction, education and therapy can be very effective.
